Police save life with donated equipment

Hoffman Estates police recently used a special piece of equipment donated to them this summer that helped paramedics save a life.

Sgt. Jim Campbell said around 7 p.m. Oct. 9, police arrived at a home on North Alder Drive and found a man unconscious and not breathing. He was in full cardiac arrest, Campbell said.

Police officers managed to revive him after administrating CPR and using an automated external defibrillator, or an AED. The device analyzes a heart's rhythm and can deliver an electrical shock to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. The man was later taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

It was the first time the police had used one of the five AEDs donated in June by the village's citizen police academy alumni association and St. Alexius. The device is the size of a laptop computer and has electrodes, and takes a user through the process with visual prompts. All sworn-in officers are trained in the use of the units along with CPR, Campbell said. Campbell asks if anyone is interested in helping outfit police with more AEDs, they can call him at (847) 781-2866.

An Emmy to follow: Village Cable Television Coordinator Bruce Anderson delivered some big news regarding the village and cable television Monday, and it wasn't that Comcast was reducing its rates -- Trustee Cary Collins has been complaining about how much he has to pay for cable for weeks.

"It's not that cold outside yet," Anderson joked.

Anderson relayed that the village had won an award for its broadcast of the state of the village address. The award was given out by the National Association of Telecommunication Officers and Advisors, and the village won third place in the public affairs category. More than 1,200 entries were received from more than 180 agencies from North America. The awards were handed out on Oct. 9 in Portland, Ore.

The village continues to plan to show board meetings on public access cable television. So here's something to build on. Congrats!

Bring your mug: The village's commission for senior citizens invites the public for "Coffee with the Board" at 10 a.m. Saturday at the village hall board room, 1900 Hassell Road. The semi-regular event allows residents to mingle with trustees. Come join them!
