Police: Loud stereo leads to Elgin man's arrest on drug, weapons charges

A loud car stereo led to the arrest of a 32-year-old Elgin man over the weekend on felony methamphetamine and weapons charges, according to Elgin police.

Fredy Ramirez-Serrano, of the 200 block of Center Street, faces felony charges of possession of 15 to 100 grams of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, possession of 15 to 100 grams of methamphetamine, and armed violence, along with misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper use of registration.

Officers on patrol at about 6 p.m. Saturday heard loud music coming from a 2002 Honda parked on the 1600 block of Mulberry Court, Elgin police said. Officers saw Ramirez-Serrano in the driver's seat with a black handgun and black knife and ordered him out of the car, but he resisted, according to the report.

Officers learned the firearm was a BB gun but also found a knife with a 3ΒΌ-inch blade and a glass meth pipe in the car, according to the report. Police took Ramirez-Serrano to the station and found a bag containing 19.7 grams of methamphetamine in his underwear, according the report.

Ramirez waived his right to remain silent and told police he's been selling meth for about a year, according to the report. He acquired meth on Thursday, sold 8 grams and intended to sell the rest that police found on Saturday, reports state.

If convicted of the most severe charges of methamphetamine possession with intent to deliver and armed violence, Ramirez-Serrano faces a sentence ranging from six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.

He must post $10,000 in order to be released from the Kane County jail while the charges are pending. Ramirez-Serrano is next due in court on April 22.
