Experience the holidays by candlelight at the 1843 Durant House Museum

Step back in time and enjoy the scents, sights, sounds, and tastes of the holidays in 19th-century Illinois at the Durant House Museum in Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4, the Durant House, built in 1843, will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. It will be lit only by candlelight and oil lamps.

Visitors will enjoy holiday music, the aroma of fresh cut evergreens, the warmth of a crackling fire, and the flicker of candlelight as they stroll through the historic home.

Outside, visitors can stay warm by a bonfire and enjoy hot cider and light snacks.

The nearby Sholes School, built in 1872, will also be open with lessons and hands-on activities for kids. Tickets are $3 or $1 per child under 18 at www.ppfv.org/candlelight.

The Durant House Museum and Sholes School are operated by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley, a non-profit organization that provides heritage and preservation education.
