Colorful dragon boats compete on Lake Arlington
Dragon boating, the world's fastest-growing water sport, returned to Lake Arlington on Saturday.
Aaron Soroka from Toronto, Canada, who oversees the event, said the Walgreens Chicago International Dragon Boat Festival, presented by PepsiCo., was "overjoyed to be back for a third year at Lake Arlington."
More than 35 dragon boat teams from across North America competed in colorful, ornate boats. The event combines strength with the teamwork of 20 paddlers in a boat whose elaborate design originates in ancient China.
"Anybody can do it," said Soroka, who added that he is excited about the growing interest in the sport. "The goal is to engage people to be more healthy."
The day also featured Walgreens products and services geared toward a healthy lifestyle, an Asian Cultural Village with multicultural performances and a Kids Zone with activities for children.
Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Salute Inc., a suburban organization dedicated to veterans and their families.
