Speedy trial request denied in Indianapolis officer's death

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A judge has denied a request for a fast and speedy trial from a man charged in the 2014 shooting death of an Indianapolis police officer.

The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1A4ICJY ) reports the judge struck down the request Friday from Major Davis Jr. because it wasn't signed by any of his public defenders. Another request from Davis was denied in January.

Davis said his rights are being violated. His requests are against the advice of his attorneys, and the judge said asking for a fast and speedy trial is up to Davis' attorneys.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case against Davis. He is accused of killing Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer Perry Renn in a July 2014 gun battle. Davis was critically hurt.

The trial is scheduled to begin February 2017.
