Libertyville man accused of stabbing an elderly man in Chicago faces multiple felony charges
A Libertyville man wanted on a charge of attempted murder in the stabbing of an elderly man on a public bus in Chicago recently was taken into custody by a fugitive task force, authorities said.
Stanislav Zhuravel, 32, of the 700 block of Vernon Avenue in Buffalo Grove, was arrested in the 200 block of West Peterson Road in Libertyville on April 30 by members of the Chicago Police Department and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Zhuravel is accused of stabbing a 69-year-old man multiple times while on a bus in the 1700 block of South State Street on Jan. 15, according to the Chicago Police Department.
He is charged with multiple felonies related to the stabbing: one count of attempted first-degree murder; two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm; one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; and one count of aggravated battery to a transit passenger, police records show.
Zhuravel has a long rap sheet and was on pretrial release for other criminal cases at the time of the stabbing, according to a CWBChicago news report.
Among the pending cases is one stemming from incidents at a Walmart in Rolling Meadows on Dec. 12, 2023. Zhuravel was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. A petition to revoke pretrial release was filed May 3 in response to the attempted murder charge, court records show.
Zhuravel is up for a status hearing in the Dec. 12 case on June 21 at the Rolling Meadows courthouse.
On Jan. 3, Zhuravel was arrested and charged with another battery in Arlington Heights, court records show.
He also pleaded guilty on Jan. 30 and was sentenced to 18 months conditional discharge for a 2023 battery case out of Wheeling. That conditional discharge was revoked on May 3 in response to attempted murder charge.
Zhuravel appeared for a detention hearing in the stabbing case May 2 and a Cook County judge ordered him held in custody pending trial, a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office said.
His next appearance is set for May 24 at the Skokie courthouse.
