District 211 Foundation awards $60,000 in senior scholarships

The District 211 Foundation has awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships this spring to graduating seniors, including students pursuing specific careers in areas like engineering, journalism and health care; students demonstrating excellence and leadership and those who have actively participated in various school activities.

The scholarships were funded through the generosity of donors, many of whom are connected to the district as alumni, former or current parents or retirees.

In thank-you notes to donors, students expressed gratitude for lifting heavy financial burdens as they approach their college education, and for the belief the selection committees have in them as they begin to make their mark on the world.

“Receiving this scholarship not only lifts a financial burden, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies, but also empowers me to further my commitment to creating a more inclusive environment within the STEM field,” one recipient wrote, noting the scholarship is “a beacon of hope for a more diverse and innovative future.”

More scholarships are added each year, and this year students could apply more easily through a single-stop scholarship portal that gave them a full picture of available awards.

“It is incredible to read through the student essays, see what they’ve accomplished and know we are helping them as they start their next chapter,” said Donna Brand, a District 211 Foundation Board member who oversees the scholarships team. “It is so rewarding.”

The District 211 Foundation is a 501(c) 3 supporting the students, schools and programs in the state’s largest high school system. To consider making a gift or launching a scholarship, contact Erin Holmes at eholmes@d211.org or Donna Brand, donnabrand@comcast.net.
