Rolling Meadows Garden Club — ‘Using Heat to Defeat Pests’: 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Rolling Meadows Community Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive, Rolling Meadows. Sharon Yiesla presents, “Growing Degree Days: Using Heat to Defeat Pests.” Yiesla, will describe the ways heat influences the development of both plants and insects. Gardening with a Tropical Twist: Virtually from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, through the Chicago Botanic Garden. Tropical plants can offer bold texture, amazing scale, colorful flowers, and fragrance. You will examine a wide assortment of vivid tropicals for sun and shade for use in garden beds and containers. Schaumburg Community Garden Club — ‘Gardening for Healing and Good Health’: 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. The guest speaker will be Jeremy Ohmes. Ohmes, is a Chicago-based gardener who believes gardens can be meaningful spaces for healing and connection. His company, Wild World Gardens, provides therapeutic garden design and personalized gardening programs that promote healing and good health. Adding Native Plants to Garden Designs: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 13, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Discover effective design elements, thoughtful plant choices, and local sources of native plants. You will learn about creating “soft landings” under trees, establishing an oasis for pollinators, and putting together containers that attract pollinators. A Garden Walk is included. $60-$75. McHenry County Master Gardeners Garden Walk: 9 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at McHenry County College, 8900 Highway 14, Crystal Lake. This year the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners are featuring two demonstration and 10 residential gardens throughout the county. Attendees experience all gardens at their own pace on a self-guided tour and Master Gardeners are on-site at each garden to answer questions and offer educational materials. Plants of the Prairie: 9-11 a.m. for three Saturdays, July 13, 20 and 27, at The Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle. In these guided outdoor walks with an expert, explore the prairie and the features of prairie plants during the peak of their midsummer beauty. Learn to identify characteristic of native prairie plants that are important for prairie restoration during the growing season and practice your plant identification skills in the field. Tri-Village Garden Club Garden Walk: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13. The Tri-Village Garden Club will host a benefit garden walk, showcasing seven gardens created by local community gardeners in Bartlett, Hanover Park and Streamwood. The gardens were hand selected by the club based on outstanding landscape design, use of perennial, annual and native flowers and overall visual impact. Club members will be on hand to answer questions and share their gardening expertise. A garden boutique will also be part of the walk, with gardening-related items for sale. Advance tickets will be sold at Platt Hill Nursery, 222 W. Lake St., Bloomingdale; Banbury Fair, 211 W. Railroad Ave., Bartlett; Goebbert’s Farm & Garden Center, 40 W. Downers Grove Garden Walk: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Downers Grove First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., Downers Grove. The 18th annual garden walk provides an opportunity to view some of the most beautiful gardens in the area and also support the work of Downers Grove First United Methodist Church's Bridge Board in providing transitional housing and mentoring for previously homeless families. Roselle House and Garden Walk: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20, from Roselle Village Hall, 31 S. Prospect St., Roselle. The Roselle Park District Garden hosts its biennial House and Garden Walk featuring two unique homes and seven gardens. Discounted tickets are $25 and may be purchased at register.rparks.org/wbwsc/webtrac.wsc/SPLASH.html or at the Claus Recreation Center, 555 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Roselle or Platt Hill Nursery, 222 W. 'A Walk In The Shire' — Lincolnshire Garden Walk: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20, begins at Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive, Lincolnshire. Grayslake Greenery Garden Club — ‘Grayslake in Bloom’ Garden Walk: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20., from Centennial Plaza, 147 Center St., Grayslake. Enjoy a self-guided tour of eight private gardens in three different Grayslake subdivisions. Meet the homeowner gardeners who will share their hospitality and gardens. You can purchase tickets online at grayslakegardenclub.org/garden-walk; on July 10, at the Grayslake Farmer’s Market; or on the day of walk from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centennial Plaza. Tickets are $10 for adults; children, ages 11 and younger are free. Those who purchase a ticket will be included in a drawing, plus on the day of the walk, the ticket can be used to enjoy special local offers.
