Local leaders speak at Elgin’s Golden K Kiwanis Club

Elgin’s Golden K Kiwanis Club invites the community to its weekly meetings to learn about local programs or institutions. There is always time to interact with the speaker after the presentation.

The meetings are at 9 a.m. Wednesdays in Lind Hall at Holy Trinity Church, 357 Division St. in downtown Elgin.

On June 5, the club welcomed Maureen Manning, executive director of Elgin’s Community Crisis Center. The center’s skilled, caring individuals provide 24/7 crisis intervention, resources and shelter.

On June 12, Elgin Community College President David Sam addressed the club. After almost 18 years with ECC, he is retiring to take up a new challenge at Bermuda College starting Aug. 5.

Mickey Miller, executive director of Senior Services Associates, spoke on June 19. She described the awesome plethora of services offered through Senior Services, including protection, care, emergency repair, visiting, recreation, transportation, engagement, and nursing home ombudsman assistance.

The June 26 meeting featured Elgin Mayor David Kaptain. He described Elgin as one of the only growing cities in Illinois. He filled audience members in on several areas of special interest, including new business, community expansion, water supply, and the question of removing Elgin’s Fox River dam.

• July 10: Shane McKenzie of McGraw Wildlife Foundation.

• July 17: Michael Krupka of Easter Seals Fox/DuPage

• July 31: Jason Krabbe, Elgin Township Highway Commissioner
