Hoffman Estates eliminates garage sale permits

Hoffman Estates has eliminated its requirement that residents obtain a village permit before holding a garage sale.

However, there are still rules that apply to the number, days, and hours of garage sales, as well as where signs may be placed.

Under the rules, a maximum of three sales are allowed at the same address each year, and only on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. Sales can begin no earlier than 8 a.m. and end by 6 p.m.

Only one on-site sign is permitted on the front lawn and they may not be installed in the right of way/parkway. Up to two directional signs are allowed on private property, with the permission of the property owner. Signs are not permitted in any public right of way, or on any street sign or utility/light pole. Banners, balloons, streamers and the like are prohibited.
