Strong design elements stand out in Daily Herald photo contest winners for June

The winning images for the Daily Herald’s June photo contest share strong design elements.

Lorilee Brodie of Warrenville takes the top spot with this elegant photo of two clematis flowers creating an outline of a dancer with her arms raised high over her head. Brodie says, “It looks like a ballerina with a purple tutu to me.”

Fireworks over Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World in Florida. Courtesy of Makayla Campbell of Round Lake Beach

Coming in second is Round Lake Beach’s Makayla Campbell with a photo of the nightly lights and lasers fireworks show at Disney World that gives the illusion of a volcanic mountain range exploding in the sky behind Cinderella Castle. Campbell writes, “No wonder they call this ‘Magic Kingdom.’ Spectacular!”

I took this from the Smithfield Street bridge in Pittsburgh in late May of this year. Michael Longo of Geneva

Michael Longo of Geneva takes third place for the combination of diagonal lines and vivid colors in his photo from the Smithfield Street Bridge over the Monongahela River. This National Historic Landmark is the oldest remaining bridge in downtown Pittsburgh. Longo said, “It’s an old steel bridge that was a juxtaposition with the more modern skyline and bridge in the background. The brilliant sunset also gave it nice color.”

My sighting of a red-winged blackbird at Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge in June 2024. Ken Lukowski of Des Plaines

Rounding out this month’s winners is Ken Lukowski of Des Plaines with a well-composed photo of a red-winged blackbird perched on a post along the floating boardwalk over Horicon Marsh, a freshwater wetland that’s a popular migratory bird and waterfowl spot in Wisconsin.
