CLC Theatre presents thought-provoking drama 'A Doll's House'

The College of Lake County Theatre Department will present the drama "A Doll's House" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, and Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 15-17; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Studio Theatre of James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on CLC's Grayslake Campus.

A groundbreaking modern masterwork by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, "A Doll's House" is the story of Nora Helmer, a young wife and mother married to Torvald, a recently promoted bank manager. The pair seem to have an idyllic life until a terrible secret from Nora's past threatens to shatter her world and she begins to question everything.

When it first premiered in 1879, "A Doll's House" sent shock waves throughout Europe and, nearly 150 years later, it continues to be as bold, brilliant and alive as ever.

The play's universal themes of gender equality and what it means to have a true partnership in a marriage still resonate today, said Alicia Hall, adjunct theater professor who is directing the play.

"Because of the challenge to perceived gender roles, 'A Doll's House' struck a deep chord in audiences of the time and was viewed as highly controversial work," said Hall.

"It's one of the earliest plays to be centered around a female character, and the emerging women's rights movement seized the play as a banner for women's independence."

This version of the play was translated by award-winning playwright, Christopher Hampton.
