Letter: Incumbent has been divisive on college board

Community college boards play a crucial role in maintaining the success of students and the college as a whole. Therefore, it is perplexing why the Daily Herald chose to endorse College of Lake County board of trustees incumbent Robert Tomei, who has proved to be a rather divisive member during his term.

Mr. Tomei recently voted against a Code of Ethics for the board and has objected to CLC adopting an anti-racism statement. He spearheaded a contentious effort to try and prevent CLC from hiring a director of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is puzzling, as a trustee should champion CLC as a welcoming and diverse institution.

He chose not to support the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff by opposing masking and COVID vaccinations. He has never attended a state or national community college meeting, or any trustee education forums.

CLC and Lake County would be better served by candidate Allena Barbato. As a current trustee of Lake Villa as well as a former administrator for CLC, Ms. Barbato would bring board and committee experience, knowledge and a passion for serving the CLC community to her position.

She is a team player and problem-solver and has worked extensively with CLC staff. She supports the right of students to gain an education in an atmosphere that allows them to thrive.

Please vote for Allena Barbato for CLC board of trustees to ensure that the College of Lake County remains a top-rated community college in Illinois and a valuable asset for students looking for an accepting, welcoming environment in which to further their education.
