Lombard woman who tried to flee jury duty gets 24 hours in jail
A Lombard woman, eager to be relieved of her duty Thursday to serve on a DuPage County grand jury, instead wound up spending the night in jail.
Judge Liam Brennan found Ruth Dorsey, 35, of Lombard guilty of direct criminal contempt of court and sentenced her to a full 24 hours behind bars after she was not selected to serve on the grand jury.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Robert Harris said Dorsey "was not happy with being sent back to the jury room when she wasn't selected to serve on the grand jury" and instead wanted to go home.
Court records from Thursday's proceedings say Dorsey "attempted to bolt from grand jury service" and was brought back before Brennan.
"In the court's presence she then screamed repeatedly, including various vulgarities, causing the grand jury selection process to stop while she was escorted out of the court's presence," Brennan wrote in his order.
Dorsey also was ordered to pay $162 in court fees.
