No injuries in Elgin building collapse

No one was hurt when a two-story building in Elgin collapsed Saturday evening, causing over $600,000 in damage, according to a city of Elgin news release.

Around 6 p.m. Saturday night, Elgin firefighters responded to the 300 block of Brook Street after calls came in reporting an explosion and structure fire. Fire crews found no fires, but instead found "extensive" damage to the roof and second floor, as well as damaged exterior walls and water seeping from multiple doorways, according to the news release,

The building was not inhabited at the time of the collapse, though initial estimates from officials put the costs of the damage above $600,000.

Franklin Boulevard remained closed due to debris and ice caused by the building's leaking water. An investigation into the cause of the collapse is still underway.
