Husband and wife killed when boat crashes into home along Fox River

A husband and wife were killed Saturday when their boat swerved off the Fox River, ran aground and struck a house in McHenry, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 5:40 p.m. on the 600 block of Country Club Drive, on the west side of the river and south of Route 120, and south of the Snuggery Restaurant.

According to Illinois Conservation District police, witnesses reported the boat traveling fast up and down the river, weaving and cutting back and forth across the water. The boat left the river and hit the shoreline at a high speed, traveling about 73 feet on land before coming to rest with its hull broken into two pieces, police said.

The male driver, a 62-year-old McHenry man, was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead at about 8:40 p.m. The female passenger, a 61-year-old McHenry woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Video footage from a home surveillance camera posted on abc7chicago.com shows the boat speeding across the river and into the house. Police said the collision caused minor damage to the house.

The boat, a 33-foot Cobalt, was removed from the scene Sunday morning. The crash remains under investigation by conservation district police.
