Immigrants lost $20,000 in citizenship scam, Des Plaines police say

Two Des Plaines residents lost about $20,000 to scammers who had offered to help them become U.S. citizens, police said.

The theft occurred in mid-August, police said.

The scammers contacted the victims and communicated with them via text messages and phone calls, police said.

The thieves collected the money through a digital app and then disappeared, police said.
