Earth Week in-person and virtual events are back at CLC

With Earth Week 2022, CLC is bringing back live events on campus, along with several virtual opportunities via Zoom. CLC is exploring how rap, psychology, dance, chemistry, technology, ecology, zoology and other perspectives help the community to better understand concerns related to sustainability and the environment.

Monday, April 18

• Alternatives to the Conventional Lawn. 3-4 p.m. Virtual on Zoom, register to attend. Find out how to make your yard more sustainable. Find beautiful alternatives to monocultures and chemicals.

Tuesday, April 19

• Psychology Club presents "Forest Bathing: The Mental Health Benefits of Being Immersed in Nature." 3-4 p.m. Virtual on Zoom. Learn about the practice of forest bathing and how nature and trees provide benefits for people.

• All About Bees: 6-7:30 p.m., Grayslake Campus, A011 Auditorium. Edward Popelka is back from retirement to share some secrets about beekeeping, the health benefits of honey and information about environmental threats to native bees and honeybees.

Wednesday, April 20

• Kate Schertz: Environment and the Mind. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Virtual on Zoom, register to attend. Schertz will discuss how your mind reflects your surroundings and how you can change your environment to change your cognition.

• Welcome to the Land of Plastic: 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Grayslake Campus, A011 Auditorium. An artistic exploration of the single-use plastic problem through movement and voice.

Thursday, April 21

• Electric Vehicles: Volts, Bolts and Beyond. 10-11 a.m., Virtual on Zoom, register to attend. The popularity and variety of electric vehicles has exploded over the past five years. Come learn about the current and future trends in electric vehicles and what it's like to own and drive one.

• John Scott: Microplastics. 1-2 p.m., Virtual on Zoom, register to attend. Learn about the impacts of microplastics in the environment from the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center.

• Snakes Alive! (and other Scaly Critters) 6-7:30 p.m., Grayslake Campus, A011 Auditorium. Get up close and friendly with some amazing snakes and other reptiles.

Friday, April 22

• Bike Share Ride and Living Lab Bingo. 1-3 p.m., Grayslake Campus, Outside Building F, Physical Fitness Center. Come out for a ride courtesy of Grayslake Bike Share or a walk around the campus to explore the Living Lab trail and win prizes.

Saturday, April 23

• Eco-Restoration Workday. 10 a.m. to noon, Grayslake Campus, Parking Lot 9. Register to attend. In honor of Earth Week, the College of Lake County Sustainability Council and the Lake County Forest Preserves are working together to restore Rollins Savanna by removing the invasive shrub buckthorn.

• Climate Solutions Summit. Grayslake Campus, A011 Auditorium. 1-1:30 p.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m. Visit information and resource tables. 1:30-3:30 p.m. program: Planned and facilitated by students from four different Lake County High Schools. Engaging speakers featured on climate change and solutions related to transportation, building construction, renewable energy and more.
