'Grease,' 'Cinderella,' 'Fiddler' among Drury Lane Theatre's offerings for 2023-2024

Drury Lane Theatre's 2023-2024 season consists of a nostalgia trip, a farcical whodunit, a tribute to an American music icon, a well-loved fairy tale and one of theater's most beloved tuners.

Subscriptions start at $205 for the five-show season, which begins April 12, 2023, with "Grease," the 1959-set, Chicago-grown musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey about high school seniors and their assorted romances. The production also incorporates songs from the 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

That's followed by "The 39 Steps" (June 23-Aug. 13, 2023), a farce featuring four performers playing more than 150 characters, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock's film incorporating the director's groundbreaking cinematic devices.

Next up is "Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash" (Aug. 30-Oct. 22, 2023), a celebration of the late country western star's music and life.

For the holidays, Drury Lane revives "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella" (Nov. 8, 2023-Jan. 7, 2024), featuring a book by Carter Beane.

The season concludes with a revival of "Fiddler on the Roof" (Jan. 24-March 17, 2024), Jerry Bock, Joseph Stein and Sheldon Harnick's tale of Tevye, his wife and daughters and their close-knit Jewish community trying to maintain their values and traditions while confronting political change that threatens their home and way of life.

In addition to its season, Drury Lane announced the appointment of Wendy Stark Prey as managing director, a position the former production manager has filled for the last three years. Former company manager Matthew Carney has been named associate artistic director.
