20th annual Sweet Home Chicago raises $711,000 to fund WINGS’ Safe Houses

WINGS Sweet Home Chicago fundraiser is a Chicago tradition that really makes a difference. Since its inception 20 years ago, the family brunch event has raised more than $13 million to support families escaping domestic violence. This years’ event was a wonderful success.

Host committee co-chairs Katherine Banich, Meghan Norton and Maria Shideler along with members of their committee planned a variety of holiday-inspired experiences for the entire family for this fundraiser, held Dec. 10, at The Four Seasons Chicago.

Again this year, Rita and John Canning led the way in raising more than $711,000 with this benefit.

Established in 1985, WINGS, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has provided more than one million nights of safe shelter since then. Last year, WINGS provided 107,110 nights of shelter and safe housing as well as 8,638 hours of services for children.

To heal and become financially independent, WINGS’ clients move to one of more than 40 homes and apartments for two years as well as 110 rapid rehousing units managed by the City of Chicago for one year.
