Chelsea captain John Terry signs up for another season

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea captain John Terry will stay at the club for another season.

The 35-year-old defender was out of contract and said in January he would not be extending his stay. But ahead of Sunday's final match of the season against Leicester, Chelsea said it would give Terry a deal for another year.

Terry will be working under his 11th Chelsea manager when Antonio Conte takes charge after leading Italy at the European Championship.

"I am delighted to sign a new contract with the club. Everyone knows I'm Chelsea through and through," Terry said. "I am looking forward to next season under the new manager and hopefully we can make it a successful one."

"Also, a special mention to the fans for their continued support," he added. "You're the best in the world."

Terry, who joined Chelsea at the age of 14, has made 703 appearances for the first team. He has won the Champions League, Europa League, four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and three League Cups.

"We are delighted John will spend another year at the club. He has been the leader of the Chelsea squad throughout the most successful period in our history," Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said. "He recently reached the 700-appearance mark, which is testament to his professionalism and dedication as well as his undoubted talent."
