House GOP chairman introduces resolution to censure IRS head

WASHINGTON (AP) - The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has introduced a resolution to censure IRS Commissioner John Koskinen (KAHS'-kihn-ihn).

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (CHAY'-fits) says the resolution seeks Koskinen's resignation or removal, as well as the forfeiture of his pension.

The Utah Republican accuses Koskinen of misconduct and says he sees censure as a preliminary step toward impeachment.

The resolution is an extension of the yearslong dispute between Republicans and the IRS over whether the agency mistreated conservative political groups when they applied for tax-exempt status.

A GOP target was Lois Lerner, who once headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. Lerner has since retired.

In 2014, the IRS disclosed that it had lost an untold number of emails to and from Lerner.
