Elgin man charged with killing infant son

Nearly three years after an Elgin infant died, his father has been charged with murdering him.

Malik Davis, 24, has been charged with first-degree murder, authorities said.

He is accused of killing his 3-month-old son, Malik Davis Jr., by shaking him.

Malik died of blunt-force head injuries on March 12, 2021, four days after he was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, authorities said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office declared the death to be a homicide.

Authorities were called to a home in the 0-100 block of Longwood Place in Elgin on March 8, 2021, for reports of a child in medical distress, according to an Elgin police news release. Malik was first taken to an Elgin hospital and then transferred to Lurie.

Elgin infant's death ruled a homicide

Davis faces eight counts of first-degree murder and 19 counts of aggravated battery.

The indictment charges he inflicted injuries, including blunt-force head trauma, on his son.

Malik was the victim in 10 of the aggravated battery charges.

The other nine counts allege that between November 2020 and January 2021, Davis inflicted injuries on a female infant he knew.

Davis was arrested in late December in Pettis County, Missouri. He waived extradition and was transported Wednesday to the Kane County jail.

He is due to appear in court on Friday afternoon to determine a date for a detention hearing.
