Foul play not suspected in death of missing Hampshire woman
Authorities have identified skeletal remains found in a heavily wooded area behind a Hampshire subdivision last week as those of a 52-year-old woman who went missing in May.
In a news release, Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said detectives were able to positively identify the remains as those of Kathey Wilk. Authorities used dental records to identify the remains. A cause of death was not determined, but authorities do not believe foul play was involved. An autopsy will not be done.
The remains were found outside of the Hampshire village limits a few houses from Wilk’s residence.
Wilk, who was reported missing May 7 by her brother, had made at least one suicide attempt in the past, Gengler said. A “suicide or goodbye note” was found inside her home when Wilk was initially reported missing in May.
Hampshire police were in the area Friday to follow-up on Wilk’s missing person case. Officers were checking the area after the weather had turned cooler and the dense brush had died off. Clothing was also found near the skeletal remains, authorities said.
