Mid-Suburban League roundup

Hersey quarterback Brad Zaucha passed for 4 touchdowns and ran for three as the Huskies won their season opener 47-14 over visiting Oak Lawn on Friday night.

The junior signal caller was 11-of-19 for 157 yards and threw TD passes of 29, 21, 10 and 16 yards.

Senior fullback Chris Polinski, who played in only two games last fall because of illness and a sprained ankle, rushed for 157 yards in 15 carries for the winners, who won their first season opener since 2005.

It was also Hersey's first game under new coach Dragan Teonic, whose team trailed 14-0 less than four minutes into the game.

Conant 27, Lake Park 14: London Dokubo couldn't have dreamed up a better beginning to his senior season, and neither could his Conant Cougars. The Conant receiver scored the first 3 times he touched the ball, starting with the opening kickoff which he returned 82-yards for a score.

Dokubo then scored on catches of 29 and 61 yards as the Cougars defeated host Lake Park 27-14 in Roselle to open the 2010 high school football season. Dokubo finished with 5 catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Conant junior quarterback Matt Cullen completed 10-of-18 passes for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns.

For the Lancers, sophomore quarterback Zack Gehant was 10-of-22 passing for 234 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Kevin Teglia (2 catches, 98 yards, 1 TD) and senior Joe Giatras (4 catches, 36 yards) were Gehant's main targets.

Barrington 41, Libertyville 28: Chase Murdock rushed for 171 yards on 37 carries and 2 touchdowns as host Barrington knocked off long-time rival 41-28 in a Friday night football season opener.

A.J. Schurr threw for 177 yards and 4 touchdowns for Libertyville.

Wheeling 19, Maine West 13: Running back Ed Scanlon rushed for 120 yards on 11 carries with 1 touchdown as the host Wildcats opened up with a nonconference victory.

Wheeling quarterback Tyler Brady had 109 yards on 17 carries with 2 touchdowns, and defensive lineman Chris Ramirez had 4 sacks and recovered a fumble.

For Maine West, Jez Buluran returned the opening kick 89 yards for a touchdown, and quarterback Ziggy Krycka had a 77-yard TD run.

Buffalo Grove 41, Mundelein 7: Buffalo Grove stunned Mundelein with 5 first-quarter touchdowns in a lopsided victory over the visiting Mustangs. The Bison defense keyed the victory, as defensive back Richard Zirngibl scored on a 28-yard interception return, Dan Recht had a touchdown on a 25-yard fumble recovery, and lineman Joe Damisch rumbled 6 yards after scooping up another fumble for a score. Bison quarterback Mike Garrity led the way on offense, rushing for 2 scores and throwing to wide receiver Brian Akialas for another. Mundelein quarterback Ryan VanderPloeg threw 62 yards to Dave Collins for the Mustangs' only touchdown.

Elk Grove 41, Niles North 0: Nick Meyer put in a full day's work in just half the time Friday. Elk Grove's senior quarterback had his hand in 5 of the Grens' 6 first-half touchdowns and watched through a running-clock second half as the hosts opened the football season with a 41-0 nonconference victory over Niles North.

Meyer completed 13-of-19 passes for 234 yards and touchdowns of 26 yards to Eddie Stahl, 13 yards to Joey Bishoff and 38 yards to Eddie Solorio. He also ran for 22- and 59-yard touchdowns and finished with 85 yards on 4 carries.

The only score that didn't have Meyer's mark on it was Mike Wary's 8-yard run that opened the first-quarter onslaught. The Grens scored on their first 4 possessions and had but one third-down situation during that explosion.

Lake Zurich 20, Fremd 10: The alarm clock went off again at 7:39.

But this time, the Lake Zurich offense didn't hit the snooze button.

With 7:39 left in the fourth quarter of their season opener against visiting Fremd on Friday, the Bears suddenly went from sleepy to wide awake. Scoreless up to that point, they scored three straight touchdowns to rally for an improbable 20-10 victory that probably kept them wired well into the night, just as a few Mountain Dews before bed would.

Fremd narrowly defeated Lake Zurich last season, 10-7. After Lake Zurich scored its first touchdown, an 8-yard run by Mike Shield that capped off a four-play drive that took just 45 seconds, Lake Zurich was still behind 10-7.

The way the Fremd offense began to control the ball on the next possession, it looked like Lake Zurich was in for the exact same fate as last, even with the exact same score.

The Vikings used rugged running back Justin Wallace (31 carries, 101 yards, 2-yard touchdown) to grind away at the Lake Zurich defense and the clock. But a Fremd penalty changed everything. The Vikings suddenly looked out of sync and eventually turned the ball over on downs at the Lake Zurich 29-yard line with 2:25 left.

Eight plays and just more than a minute later, the Bears were at it again, more awake than ever.

Quarterback Zach Till ran in a touchdown from 4 yards out to give Lake Zurich a 13-10 lead with 55.6 seconds left.

Fremd quarterback Richard Concialdi was tough to stop, connecting on 17-of-31 passes for 221 yards.

Lake Forest 28, Palatine 21: Lake Forest senior quarterback Paul Carrollo found wide reciever Jacob Hellinga (8 catches, 107 yards) for a 42-yard game winning score with 1:26 remaining giving the Scouts a thrilling 28-21 opening night victory over visiting Palatine.

Palatine senior quarterback Cody Bobbit (15-for-23, 166 yards) scored on a 26-yard keeper with 7:32 remaining to help the Pirates tie the score at 21-21.

Senior Jimmy Smearman (15 carries, 73 yards) caught an 11-yard scoring pass on the opening drive and added a 1-yard scoring run with 1:52 remaining in the first half to give Palatine a 14-13 halftime advantage.

Lake Forest's Owen Williams rushed for 106 yards and one touchdown, and junior linebacker Dominik Keefe secured the victory with an interception with 38 seconds remaining.

York 34, Prospect 21: Ryan Kent scored 4 touchdowns in York's 34-21 win over visiting Prospect. The senior running back scored on runs of 55, 44, and 4 yards and caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jim Nudera.

The Dukes were tied at halftime before scoring twice in the third quarter. Prospect quarterback Steve Dazzo scored on an 18-yard run and threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Nick Czerniak.
