College of Lake County Music Department announces fall concert lineup

Six concerts, featuring both a huge variety of choral and instrumental music, will be presented by the College of Lake County Music department during fall semester.

The CLC Music department boasts four instrumental groups: the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band. CLC's choral program includes four ensembles: the Choir of Lake County, the CLC Singers, the Chamber Choir and the Gospel Choir. The ensembles feature musically talented CLC students as well as community members.

Friday, Oct. 11: Jazz Ensembles Concert at 7:30 p.m. The 19-member Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael Flack, will play the following tunes: “Back In Time” by Pat Metheny; “I Can't Stop Loving You” by Don Gibson, arranged by Quincy Jones; “Boop Boo Be Doop” by Bill Holman; “I Thought About You” arranged by Tom Kubis; “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” by Cory and Cross, arranged by Quincy Jones; and “The Swizzle” by Benny Carter. The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dave Hibbard, will play the following selections: “Blue Orleans” by Les Hooper, “Chuggin'” by Paul Smoker, “Nostalgia” by Les Hooper, “Cute” by Neal Hefti and “Kids are Pretty People” by Thad Jones.

Sunday, Oct. 20: Wind Ensemble's Concert at 4 p.m. The 45-member ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael Flack, will play John Williams' “Star Wars Trilogy” arranged by Donald Hunsberger. Its four movements include “The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme),” “Princess Leia's Theme,” “The Battle in the Forest” and “Yoda's Theme and Star Wars (main theme).” Other selections include “Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, No. 7” by Anton Dvorak, arranged by Klaus Butterstein; “The Marbled Midnight Mile” by Steven Bryant; “Hold This Boy and Listen” by Carter Pann; “La Mezquita de Cordoba” by Julie Giroux; and “The Black Horse Troop” by John Philip Sousa.

Sunday, Oct. 27: Fall Choral Concert at 4 p.m. Enjoy music by all four CLC vocal ensembles: Choir of Lake County, CLC Singers, Chamber Singers and Gospel Choir. Enjoy beautiful choral works from a variety of genres, including pieces such as Kyrie and Gloria from Haydn's “Paukenmesse” (Mass in Time of War), “Lord of the Dance” by Carter/Willcocks, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Gigue” by Bach, “Beautiful Dreamer” by Foster, “Walk Together, Children” by Leach, “Take Me to the Water” by Dilworth and ending with “Make Our Garden Grow” by Bernstein, performed by the combined ensembles.

“The numbers in our ensembles are at an all-time high: 48 in each of the large ensembles (Choir of Lake County and Gospel Choir), 25 in the CLC Singers and 15 in Chamber,” said Dr. Charles Clency, director of choirs. “And the voices are magnificent!”

Sunday, Nov. 17: Jazz Ensembles Concert at 4 p.m. This concert features trumpeter Carl Saunders performing with the CLC Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. Saunders has played lead trumpet in the bands of Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson and Benny Goodman. The CLC Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble will also perform.

Sunday, Dec. 15: Holiday Choral Concert at 3:30 p.m. Beautiful holiday music will be sung by all four CLC vocal ensembles: Choir of Lake County, CLC Singers, Chamber Singers and Gospel Choir.

Sunday, Dec. 15: Holiday Wind Ensemble Concert at 7 p.m. Join the CLC Wind Ensemble for a festive holiday concert featuring traditional songs and contemporary wind ensemble literature.

Wednesday, Dec. 18: Concert Band Concert at 7:30 p.m. The CLC Concert Band, directed by John Mose, will present a wonderful concert of holiday favorites and traditional band repertoire.

Concerts are presented in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. For tickets and information, call the JLC Box Office at (847) 543-2300 or visit www.clcillinois.edu/tickets. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 90 minutes prior to each performance. To avoid long lines at the Box Office caused by last-minute sales, please purchase your tickets in advance or arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the performance. Note: due to the quiet nature of many songs, choral concerts are not appropriate for children under age 3.

CLC Music Department facts

Music department concerts are performed by CLC students and community members, with occasional professional guest artists. The director of bands is Dr. Michael Flack, and the director of choirs is Dr. Charles Clency. Community members are invited to participate in CLC Music department ensembles or to take private lessons for college credit or personal enrichment. The CLC Music Department offers 59 courses leading to two different degrees: Associate in Music or Associate in Fine Arts in music.
