Cantigny's Art in Bloom festival goes interactive

On Father's Day weekend, more than 75 artists will display their work among the blooming gardens of Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

The park boasts one of the largest display gardens in the Midwest. Adding to its beauty, Cantigny annually celebrates a popular fine art festival. Art in Bloom runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 18, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 19.

Though Art in Bloom is an annual Cantigny tradition, this year's festival will be different, said Laura Evans, director of visitor services.

Cantigny staff now is producing the festival; in years past, a Chicago-area company has put the pieces together. The change allows Cantigny to personalize the festival, showcasing the park and offering more for patrons, Evans said.

“We are focusing on the artists, but there will also be fun activities for children and families to make it more interactive,” Evans said.

The artists, both local and from across the country, were chosen in February by five judges. Artists submitted examples of their art and booth presentations, and 75 were chosen to participate in the festival.

The artists will be in booths around the park displaying and selling their art. Some will perform live demonstrations for visitors as well.

“There will be a lot more than just painting,” said Jeff Reiter, communications manager at Cantigny. “The art will be presented in a variety of different mediums.”

Reiter said participating artists usually display works in pastels, oils, watercolors, pottery, metal, sculptures and more.

In addition to the art, families will find children's activities and live music, and guests are invited to picnic on the grounds or try the Le Jardin restaurant.

Visitors are also encouraged to tour the park's regular attractions, the gardens and museums.

“People should come and enjoy the beautiful grounds; everything is in bloom,” Evans said.

Cantigny, on the estate of Col. Robert McCormick, features a golf course, two museums — including the First Division Museum — and 30 acres of gardens.

Every year the art festival is one of the biggest and most popular events at the park, Evans said.

“A lot of people have made it a Father's Day tradition,” Evans said.

Festival admission is free with $5 parking per vehicle.
