Carpentersville man charged with stabbing person in the mouth

A Carpentersville man is held on $500,000 bail after being charged with attacking a man in a car and stabbing him in the mouth on Easter Sunday.

Hugo H. Mendoza-Cardenas, 35, of the 100 block of Caddy Avenue, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, vehicular invasion, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to Kane County court records and Kane County prosecutors.

The victim was sitting in his car Sunday afternoon on Tulsa Avenue when Mendoza-Cardenas approached and stabbed the victim in the mouth, according to prosecutors.

Mendoza-Cardenas and the victim, whom Mendoza-Cardenas knew, struggled inside the car as Mendoza-Cardenas threatened the man, according to prosecutors.

The victim also suffered cuts to both hands and was treated and released from a hospital.

Prosecutors did not immediately respond to inquiries as to what may have prompted the attack. Carpentersville Police Chief Michael Kilbourne did not return phone messages on Monday and Tuesday.

Mendoza-Cardenas must post $50,000 to be released from the Kane County jail while the charges are pending. If he does post bail, he is to have no contact with the victim and three other people, and he must stay away from their residences on Tulsa and Toro Circle, according to court records.

Mendoza-Cardenas is next due in court Wednesday. If convicted of the most severe charge of attempted murder, faces a sentence ranging from six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.
