Leyden 'lays an egg' with 2 weekend losses

The Leyden Eagles boys basketball team was hoping to rebound by securing a win Saturday night at Niles North after their 66-39 loss to Downers Grove South on Friday night.

It was not to be.

The Eagles were sunk by the Vikings 55-32 in a nonconference contest.

Leyden fell to 11-13 and coach Bill Hisler was not happy with the Eagles' effort.

"We just laid a egg this weekend," Hisler said. "We didn't handle pressure well in either game. On offense tonight the right guys were not geting the touches. This week in practice we're going to work on handling pressure defense."

The Eagles trailed the Vikings (12-12) by a 13-10 margin early in the second quarter before things unraveled.

Niles North went on a 10-2 run to lead 23-12 with a minute left in the first half - and the Eagles trailed 25-14 at the break.

The Vikings' Duane Williams and Andre Shaw opened the third quarter by scoring baskets and Leyden could not recover. The Eagles trailed 46-23 after three quarters.

The Eagles' Mike Wolf was shaken up after a violent collision under the basket while going for a rebound in the third quarter and left the game.

Sophomore Patrick Listwan led the Eagles with 16 points. No one else had more than 3 points.

Abdel Nader led the Vikings with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Marlon Senior added 11 points and Malachi Nix had 10.

"We knew Leyden had some good shooters," said Vikings coach and Rolling Meadows graduate Glenn Olson. "We had to put pressure on them. This was one of our best efforts this season."
