GOP forum set

The Republicans running for the 8th Congressional District seat will meet for a candidate forum at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake. The forum, sponsored by the McHenry County Young Republicans and Patriots United, will be held in Conference Center Building B. Dirk Beveridge, John Dawson, Christopher Geissler, Greg Jacobs, Maria Rodriguez and Joe Walsh are running for the GOP nomination. The seat now is held by Democratic Rep. Melissa Bean, who is seeking re-election. Also running are Democrat Jonathan Farnick and the Green Party's Bill Scheurer.

Senior dinner planned

Senior citizens living in Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 can attend a free holiday dinner and concert on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The event will be at Libertyville High School, 708 W. Park Ave. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. and the show will begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are required and are available on a limited basis at the Libertyville and Vernon Hills senior centers. Drop off toys in Mundelein

Toy donations for the U.S. Marine Corps' "Toys for Tots" program can be made at the Mundelein police station, 221 N. Lake Street. Unwrapped toys in their original packaging will be given to children who are less fortunate. The collection will run until about a week before Christmas.

Veterans Day in Lindenhurst

Veterans Day ceremonies will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Lindenhurst Veterans Memorial, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road. Ceremonies include the U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard, the Lakes High School Band, along with members of VFW Post 4894. Rear Admiral Mack C. Gaston, former commander at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, will be the keynote speaker. For details, call (847) 356-8252.

Input wanted on savanna

Lake County Forest Preserve District officials want to hear what the public thinks about alternative improvements being considered for the Waukegan Savanna. A planning open house is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Waukegan Fire Station No. 5, 3221 N. Green Bay Road. Possible new recreation improvements include crushed-stone or mowed-grass trails, a dog exercise area, a rustic nature exploration area, an informal picnic area and organic farming. Drug awareness presentation

The Antioch Police Department in conjunction with the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group will hold a drug awareness presentation for adults at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the auditorium at Antioch Community High School, 1133 Main Street. Topics will include the different drugs and drug paraphernalia being used by our youth today as well as current drug trends.
