Briefs: Airline flight delays lower in August

WASHINGTON -- U.S. airlines improved their on-time flight arrival rate to 71.7 percent in August, a small increase from July, which ranked as one of the industry's worst months, the U.S. Transportation Department said Wednesday. But the August on-time arrivals remained far below the year-ago rate of 75.8 percent, department data showed. The rate of on-time arrivals in July 2007 -- 69.8 percent -- was one of the worst since the government started keeping records in 1995. In August, U.S. carriers canceled 1.9 percent of their scheduled domestic flights, a decline from 2.1 percent in July.

Walgreen to offer AARP discounts

DEERFIELD -- Walgreen Co., the largest U.S. drugstore chain, started a new catalog and Web site for members of the American Association of Retired Persons, offering them a discount on more than 20,000 health and beauty products. The new brochure and Internet site, aarp.walgreens.com, will offer AARP's 39 million members an exclusive 5 percent discount, Walgreen said Wednesday.

Kraft could win delay in P&G suit

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge said she may grant Kraft Foods Inc.'s request to delay Procter & Gamble Co.'s patent infringement lawsuit over plastic coffee containers while Kraft seeks a review of the patents. U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton in San Francisco Wednesday canceled an Oct. 24 hearing on P&G's request for a court order blocking Kraft from using a 39-ounce container for its Maxwell House coffee.

Google increases capacity of e-mail

SAN FRANCISCO -- Google Inc. said Wednesday it is adding new security tools and more than doubling the storage capacity of e-mailboxes. This is Google's first attempt to capitalize on the technology that it picked up in its recently completed $625 million acquisition of e-mail security specialist Postini Inc. Google has boosted the storage capacity of each individual mailbox to 25 gigabytes, up from 10 gigabytes previously. The storage capacity of individual accounts, called Gmail, will remain at 3 gigabytes.
