Trio of local soccer teams prevail
Geneva's boys soccer team won their season opener, topping Oswego 3-1 on the road. Seamus Kaminski scored twice and Shawn Sloan added a goal and an assist.
Boys soccer
Marmion 3, Willowbrook 2: Ralph Palmeri scored the game-winner in the 79th minute as the Cadets won a thriller over Willowbrook. Pablo Del Toro tallied the first two Marmion goals.
Kaneland 3, Marengo 2: Kevin Durrenber scored twice in the second half, giving the Knights a win in Marengo. Kaneland controlled the flow of play all game long, outshooting the hosts 30-4.
Boys golf
Kaneland 169, Somonauk 178: Curtis Lubic took medalist honors for the Knights with a 41 at Hughes Creek. Hayley Guyton shot 42 while Jeff Smith and JG Gillett both shot 43.
Football
Fox Valley Pigskin Preview: Aurora's Noon Lions Club will hold a fourth annual Aurora-Area Football Coaches' Night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Luigi's Pizza and Fun Center 732 Prairie St. in Aurora.
The public is invited. The event includes a social hour from 6:30 to 7 p.m., pasta and pizza dinner from 7 to 8 p.m., and the program from 8 to 9 p.m.
Admission is $10 per person. A raffle and door prizes are included. Proceeds will benefit Lions charities.
Coaches invited are Buck Drach, West Aurora High School; Bill Bryant, East Aurora High School; Dan Thorpe, Marmion Military Academy; Mike Curry, Aurora Central Catholic High School; Don Beebe, Aurora Christian High School; Paul Murphy, Waubonsie Valley High School; Greg Urwiler, Mooseheart; and Rich Duncan, Aurora University.
