Recent warm weather extends loose leaf pickup

Due to the record-breaking warm temperatures this fall, Mount Prospect has decided to extend its curbside loose leaf pickup program for one week only.

This is the first time in the 40-year history of the program that it is being extended.

Leaves will be picked up the week of Thanksgiving --Monday through Wednesday -- on the regularly scheduled Monday through Wednesday pickup times.

Christmas music: Prospect Heights Library presents chamber music from the John Hersey High School Honors Chamber Orchestra from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the library, 12 North Elm St. Music Director William Baar will perform longtime favorites including folk melodies by American composer Aaron Copland and Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."

Holiday play: The Child's Play Touring Theatre brings its production of "The Christmas That Almost Wasn't" to Oakton Community College, at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday. The college is at 1600 E. Golf Road in Des Plaines.

This presentation offers a look at the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Written by children, these Christmas catastrophes are brought by Child's Play Touring Theatre, a nationally recognized organization that promotes the benefits of reading and writing to elementary school students. Tickets are $7 for general admission; $5 for children under $12; and $4 for groups of 15 or more.

The program is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

Thanksgiving exercise: If you're worried about gaining too much weight over Thanksgiving stop by the Mount Prospect Park District from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the RecPlex, 420 W. Dempster St. for an exercise class, called Burn Calories: Raise Money! Each participant will receive a T-shirt, and all of the proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
