Winfield library projects will wait
With with an eye toward the sagging economy, Winfield residents narrowly rejected a request to borrow $1.8 million to improve handicapped accessibility and alleviate crowding at the Winfield Public Library.
With all precincts reporting, 1,352 voters rejected the request while 1,169 supported it, unofficial vote totals show.
Officials say the facility at 0S291 Winfield Road doesn't meet Americans With Disability Act requirements. The library, which opened in 1981, doesn't have an elevator. The restroom facilities also are difficult for people with disabilities to use. And the long outside ramp to the main level doesn't meet standards because the slope is too steep, officials say. Library officials also hoped the loan would fund construction of an addition. Without the loan, no improvements will be made.
