Plainfield boy heading home from hospital

Ten-month-old Michael Gillespie's life began with many strikes against him. Born 10 weeks premature to parents Greg and Keri, of Plainfield, Michael appears eager Tuesday to head home for the first time from Naperville's Edward Hospital.

Michael was born with a rare congenital abdominal wall malformation in which all his major organs were contained in a sac outside of the abdominal wall.

A special solution was applied daily to the sac by nurses in order to form a thin skin, which eventually was absorbed into the body.

"It's been a wicked roller coaster ride of ups and downs, where you feel the highest of highs and the lowest of lows," Keri Gillespie said. "The staff here at this hospital has been wonderful."
