New hours for library:

Operating hours at the Cook Memorial Public Library District branch at Vernon Hills' village hall will change next month. Starting June 22, the library will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed on Sundays until after Labor Day, at which time Sunday hours will run from 1 to 5 p.m. The hours are changing because of the construction project that's closing the main library in Libertyville for more than a year.

Garage sale scheduled:

The Libertyville High School pompom squad will hold a garage sale May 29 and 30. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at a house at 29560 N. Hawthorne Lane, Libertyville. All proceeds will benefit the varsity pom squad.

St. Paul's improves facilities:

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, located at 824 N Lewis in Waukegan, is undergoing renovations and the addition of a three-story elevator system with construction expected to conclude by June 1st. The retooling effort prepares for anticipated growth within the congregation and will provide elevator access to its basement fellowship area and second floor classrooms. Improvements on landscaping, interior flooring and lighting fixtures are also in the works. The Retirement Research Foundation is providing financial aid to St. Paul's through its Accessible Faith Grant Program.

Antioch administrator sacked:

Antioch Village Administrator Jill Velan has been dismissed from that post, effective May 31. Mayor Lawrence Hanson and the village board opted not to renew her contract, according to a news release. Velan was hired in March 2008. Jim Keim, the village's director of physical services, will serve as acting administrator.

Public Works Open House:

In honor of Public Works Week, the third annual Public Works Open House will take place this weekend. This open house will give the community a chance to meet people who dedicate their time to maintaining the public works systems, ask any questions and learn about the public works department. Some activities include seeing tractors, dump trucks and sweeping equipment up close, learning how to plant and care for trees and touring the water reclamation plant. The open house will take place this Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Public Works Facility at 302 Slocum Lake Road in Wauconda.
