West Chicago incumbents win squeakers

In extremely close council races for both Ward 2 and 3 in West Chicago, the incumbents appear to have edged out challengers by a mere handful of votes.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial results show Ward 2 Councilman Ron Monroe with 95 votes to 86 for Roy Volkert. Volkert had been trying to return to the council after a nearly four-year hiatus. He represented the city's second ward from 1998 to 2005.

An even closer race played out in Ward 3, where Russell Radkiewicz was re-elected over Alton Hallett by just two votes, 80-77, according to unofficial totals.

"I will continue doing what I have to serve the people of my ward," Radkiewicz said Tuesday night.

He'd said his goals were to represent his neighbors and see that the ward and city get the best resolution possible regarding the EJ&E/Canadian National sale.

Hallett is a retired UPS driver who'd focused on fiscal responsibility.
