Goodman Theatre's acclaimed 'The Who's Tommy' opens on Broadway next March

In an announcement that surprised no one who experienced the incandescent revival last summer, Goodman Theatre's re-imagined production of "The Who's Tommy" will open on Broadway next March, say producers Stephen Gabriel and Ira Pittelman.

Goodman's record-breaking production - the highest grossing in the theater's 98-year history - received nine Joseph Jefferson Awards earlier this month, winning every category in which it was nominated.

Director/co-writer Des McAnuff described the 2023 version of composer/lyricist Pete Townshend's 1969 rock opus (featuring additional music by John Entwistle and Keith Moon), as an "expansion" of the 1993 stage adaptation for a new generation possessing a "broad appetite for all kinds of music and storytelling."

Townshend agrees the time is right for "Tommy."

"In 1993, working with Des on the staged theater piece, we broke the established rules for a musical show," he said in a prepared statement. "Now, the current generation is breaking all of those rules again and what Des has achieved with this incredible new production honors them and their courage and audacity."

Townshend's muscular score - with its quiet murmurs, mammoth sustained chords and glorious distortion - powers McAnuff's fresh, incisive production, which boasts bold, sophisticated visual effects and wonderfully kinetic choreography.

McAnuff who helmed the 1993 Broadway production and Goodman's revival, directs the 2024 transfer, which marks the first time the show has played on Broadway in more than 30 years. He'll be accompanied by the Goodman creative team: music director and orchestrator Rick Fox; music supervisor and arranger Ron Melrose; choreographer Lorin Latarro; set designer David Korins; projection designer Peter Nigrini; costume designer Sarafina Bush; lighting designer Amanda Zieve; sound designer Gareth Owen; and wig and hair designer Charles LaPointe.
