Time runs out on Naperville antique store

Antique shoppers in Naperville have less than two months to find hidden treasures at Antiques on Jefferson.

The store at 34 W. Jefferson Ave. in downtown Naperville will close its doors at the end of May after 20 years in business. It's reducing the price of many remaining items.

The antique mall includes 58 dealers with a variety of goods including furniture, books, linens, jewelry, toys, crystal, glassware, china, purses and decorative accessories.

But between tough times in the economy and a shrinking demand for antiques and collectibles, owner Gary Fry said it's time to close shop.

"First of all, the IKEA generation that's coming up doesn't collect," Fry said. "Second, they're minimalists and for a lot of them Crate and Barrel will be an upgrade."

His isn't the only antique store that's struggling. Thousands are closing across the country, he said, although his hasn't suffered as much as some due to the amount of traffic in downtown Naperville.

During his seven years running the store, Fry said he has enjoyed chats with the customers who regularly shop there and the camaraderie of the dealers, many of whom are retired professionals.

Beginning Saturday, Antiques on Jefferson will be holding a storewide sale until it closes. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

While some dealers will be moving some of their merchandise to other locations, others are planning to sell all of their remaining inventory in the coming weeks.

"There could be some really good buys for people," Fry said.
