Woman dies in crash on Route 31 in McHenry County

A crash on Route 31 in unincorporated McHenry County left an Elmhurst woman dead, the sheriff's office said Saturday night.

The sheriff's office said it responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash at about 10:24 a.m. Saturday on Route 31 north of Pioneer Road. Police found a 2021 GMC Acadia had been traveling northbound when the driver crossed the centerline and struck a 2015 Acura TLX traveling southbound. It's unclear what caused the GMC to leave its lane.

The 56-year-old driver of the Acura was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

A 30-year-old woman from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, was driving the GMC. She was first taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in McHenry after the accident and was then flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Police said the section of Route 31 between Pioneer Road and Barnard Mill Road was closed for about four hours.

The sheriff's office said it's still investigating the crash.
