Glendale Heights garage fire renders home uninhabitable

No injuries were reported from a garage fire Sunday afternoon in Glendale Heights that left the home with more than $140,000 in damage and rendered it uninhabitable.

Glenside Fire Protection District Chief Richard Cassady said firefighters were alerted to the blaze by residents of the home on the 0-100 block of West Fullerton Avenue at 4:15 p.m.

Cassady said the residents reported hearing "popping and crackling" from the garage. When a resident went to investigate the sounds, the fire was discovered and 911 was called.

Firefighters reported heavy fire from the attached garage.

A resident of the house removed two cars from the garage before firefighters arrived, Cassady said.

The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, but firefighters remained on scene for more than three hours checking for hot spots and investigating the fire's origins. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Cassady said the fire was not sparked by either of the vehicles in the garage.
