North Chicago woman charged in Waukegan double shooting

A North Chicago woman has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with a shooting in Waukegan on May 21, officials said.

Sophia Hanna, 19, also was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon, according to Waukegan police. She was being held Saturday on $2 million bond, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office, and would need to post $200,000 to be released.

Police said people gathered in a parking lot at 1824 14th St. in Waukegan on May 21 for a prearranged fight between two women, but shots were fired into the crowd before the fight started.

A female juvenile of Waukegan was struck in the hip and a 22 year-old Park City resident struck in the right thigh, police said. Both were treated at local hospitals.

Multiple witnesses told police Hanna fired at the two people, according to reports. An arrest warrant was issued, and she was taken into custody Friday, police said.

Hanna is on probation for shooting another person in a previous incident, police said.
