Woman who bit police officer gets 4-year prison sentence
A woman who bit a Glendale Heights police officer has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Tyler Russell, 27, formerly of Glendale Heights, was sentenced on Tuesday, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office. In August, a DuPage County jury convicted Russell of aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated battery.
On June 20, 2020, police were investigating a report of two people arguing in a parking lot in the 500 block of Gregory Avenue, officials said. Russell was sitting behind the wheel of a car.
According to authorities, police officers said they smelled alcohol coming from the car and saw two open cans of beer in the cupholders and an open case of beer. Russell got out of the vehicle when ordered but walked away from the officers, authorities said.
As the officers were arresting Russell, she bit one in the right bicep. The bite tore the sleeve of his uniform and removed skin.
After being sentenced to four years in prison, Russell filed a motion asking the judge to reduce her sentence. A hearing on that motion will be on Thursday, Oct. 26.
Bystanders filmed Russell's arrest and posted it on social media, alleging the officers used an inappropriate amount of force to subdue her. The village hired an outside firm to investigate the allegations and determined the force was justified.
