Aurora man found guilty of sexually assaulting woman during 2020 party

An Aurora man has been convicted of criminal sexual assault of an intoxicated woman, authorities said.

Rene Cano-Rodriguez, 32, of the 600 block of Gates Street, was found guilty Thursday by Kane County Judge David Kliment.

According to evidence prosecutors presented, Cano-Rodriguez and the victim were attending a party at a house in Aurora on Aug. 22, 2020. Cano-Rodriguez gave her multiple shots of tequila to drink, and was aware she was highly intoxicated, prosecutors alleged.

He helped walk the victim to her bedroom, and then sexually assaulted her when she was unable to give consent because of her level of intoxication, prosecutors said.

Cano-Rodriguez faces four to 15 years in prison when sentenced. He also will have to register for life as a sexual offender.

Cano-Rodriguez was taken in to custody after his trial and his next court date is Dec. 1.
