Holiday tree lights brighten the evening sky in Prospect Heights

Prospect Heights Mayor Pat Ludvigsen flipped the oversized power switch, and the bulbs immediately brightened the evening sky during the city's tree lighting outside the Gary Morava Center Saturday.

Santa arrived on a sleigh soon after to the delight of the dozens of children attending, as Girl Scouts sang Christmas carols. Hot chocolate served by Lions Club members helped keep everyone warm.

During a brief speech before the flipping of the switch, Ludvigsen said he has lived in Prospect Heights his whole life, and he's been attending the tree lighting events since his three daughters, now in their 20s, were in diapers.

"I ask all those people with kids, soak this in, they grow fast," Ludvigsen said. "You will not believe how fast they will grow."

The event was sponsored by the Prospect Heights Garden Club and the Lions Club.
