CL South cruises past Dundee-Crown
Crystal Lake South had 3 touchdowns called back.
The Gators were whistled for 10 penalties for 100 yards and the South defense allowed 229 yards of passing by Dundee-Crown quarterback Logan Kissack.
But big plays overcome a lot of mistakes.
Scoring all 6 touchdowns on plays of 10 yards or more, the Gators were able to crush Dundee-Crown 42-7 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play on homecoming Fridday at South's Ken Bruhn Field.
"I hate homecoming," said South coach Jim Stuglis. "There are so many distractions during the week. We weren't as sharp as we have been the last 2 weeks. The scoreboard wouldn't indicate that, but we were on our heels."
The Chargers (3-3, 0-2) wasted two golden opportunities to score in the first quarter.
On D-C's first drive, the Chargers moved to the South 4. On a fourth-and-1, Dundee-Crown's Ian Salvatini was stopped short of the first down on a jarring tackle by linebacker Alex Macaulay, who had 2 interceptions in the game. Macaulay also had a 53-yard punt return called back because of penalty.
On the Chargers' next possession they failed to take advantage of a 23-yard punt from the end zone by Brandon Erickson. D-C took over at the South 24, but was hurt by two 15 yard penalties.
"We were moving the ball well in the first quarter, but couldn't get the ball in the end zone," said D-C coach Mike Davis. "On the fourth-and-1 play, we had a missed block that was costly."
After a scoreless first quarter, the Gators (5-1, 2-0), exploded for 4 touchdowns and had 3 called back for penalties, which included a 82-yard kickoff return by Kameron Scott.
The Gators, who play at Cary-Grove next week, scored 2 touchdowns in a 16 second span to start the second quarter. Drew Ormseth found a wide open Vince Benedetto for a 38-yarder and Colin Masterson scored from 26 yards out to give South a 14-0 lead.
D-C's only score of the game came on a 4-yard run by Salvatini. Ormseth, who threw for 3 scores, threw a 3-yard TD to Alec Giles and a 65-yard TD pass to Masterson. The Gators led 28-7 at halftime.
South scored twice in the second half on a 46-yard run by Erickson and a 10-yard run by Chris Krueger.
Masterson, who had a 26-yard TD called back, ran 10 times for 53 yards and a score.
"My line is awesome," said Masterson. "They are the reason I have any success."
For D-C, Kissack was 17-of-36 passing for 229 yards and 2 interceptions.
