Baseball: Dundee-Crown shuts out Round Lake

Timely hitting, quality pitching and nearly flawless defense.

All those ingredients added up to a 5-inning 10-0 win for No. 8 seed Dundee-Crown against No. 9 seed Round Lake in Class 4A regional baseball play Wednesday afternoon in Carpentersville.

The Chargers (11-15) travel to top-seeded Jacobs (24-7) Friday at 4:30 p.m. for a regional semifinal.

"There is a reason Jacobs is the top team in the region," said D-C coach Patrick Conlin. "They are as good as it gets. We have a good senior core and will be ready for the challenge and the battle."

Justin Colon's 2-run single in the fifth inning sent D-C on its way to Wednesday's win. Colon was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI, 2 runs scored and 3 stolen bases.

"We were loose and ready to go," said Colon. "I got a good look at the fastball all game. This was a good win."

No. 9 hitter Quinn Wesol was 2-for-3 with a 2-run single for the winners. Dundee-Crown pounded out 10 hits and stole 5 bases in 5 attempts.

"We have very good team speed and want to turn singles into doubles," said Conlin. "We put the pressure on them early."

D-C, which scored 5 runs in the second got an excellent pitching performance from starting and winning pitcher, left-hander Dylan Reilly.

Reilly, who blanked the Panthers (1-18), on 1 hit in 4 innings, struck out 5 without allowing a walk.

All my pitches were working." said Reilly. "I was able pound the zone with strike one. I was in good rhythm the whole game and Kaden (Mannis) called a great game behind the plate."

"Dylan was fantastic," said Conlin. "He was throwing easy and throwing strikes."

Trent Minaglia wiggled out of a bases loaded 1-out jam in the fifth to preserve the shutout for D-C

Manny Gonzalez, Ryan Bleim, Anthony Leo and Riley Walsh each had singles for the Panthers. Dave Russ was the starting and losing pitcher for the Panthers.

"These kids don't give up and get down," said Round Lake coach Ed Adamson. "We played four freshmen today. We have a lot of work in the offseason to do. Dundee-Crown is a senior-heavy team. Their pitchers throw hard and they have good hitters. They have a very good team."
