Frosty 5K Race a huge success thanks to warmer weather

Thanks to an uptick in temperatures, the Frosty 5K Race in Round Lake Beach wasn't so cold this year, and participants loved the unexpectedly warm day.

A total of 110 runners and walkers of all ages participated in the event by the Round Lake Area Park District Feb. 23, which began and ended at the Sports Center, 2004 Municipal Way, Round Lake Beach.

"We had an absolutely perfect day of weather for the Frosty footrace," said Matt Netrefa, Sports Center supervisor and organizer of this year's race. "Race conditions were great and helped bring out a strong showing of walk-in registrations."

The top male finisher was Juan Carrera of Round Lake with a time of 16:38.6. The top female finisher was Pamela Staton of Chicago with a time of 18:39.2.

Others top finishers by age group were:

• Females 19 and under: Jacqueline Sanchez, 14, Round Lake Beach (first); Sophia Ortiz, 8, Round Lake Beach (second)

• Males 19 and under: John Sanchez, 18, Round Lake Beach (first); Adrian Baquera, 16, Round Lake Beach (second); Riley Walsh, 14 (third)

• Females 20-29: Maddie Ley, 28, Round Lake (first); Deonna Klobe, 28, Lindenhurst (second); Alex Oyen, 29, Crystal Lake (third)

• Males 20-29: Simon Rosu, 27, Oak Lawn (first); Michael Uhl, 25, Wauconda (second); Roberto Ochoa, 29, Round Lake (third)

• Females 30-39: Stefanova Miriama, 39, Stickney (first); Erin Abraham, 37, Volo (second); Michelle Tannehill, 38, Chicago (third)

• Males 30-39: Greg Dzierdzik, 32, Burbank (first); Saul Contreras, 38, Round Lake Park (second); Matt Boren, 38, Round Lake (third)
