Submitted by Kimberly Ghys

The new 2020 Gurnee Community Pageant Queens were crowned Saturday, July 18, at the Viking Park Bandshell, where the socially distanced outdoor pageant was held. The pageant consisted of personal interviews, speech, pop questions and evening gown modeling.

The new queens are:

• Miss Gurnee Mia Johnson, 19, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.

• Junior Miss Gurnee Morgan Ghys, 13, an eighth-grader at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee.

• Little Miss Gurnee Melanie Mateos, 7, a second-grader at Woodland Elementary in Gurnee.

The queens will work closely with Mayor Kristina Kovarik, the village of Gurnee staff and the Gurnee Park District to serve their community over the next year. The queens will compete at the Lake County Illinois State Pageant next spring.

The Gurnee Community Pageant is a philanthropic organization that empowers young women through volunteer opportunities and public appearances. Pageant co-directors are Sharyl Friedlander and Laura Hetman.
