Volunteers needed at Arlington Heights Historical Society
Looking to serve your local community or find a new hobby? Check out opportunities at the Arlington Heights Historical Society.
The Arlington Heights Historical Society is a nonprofit organization serving the community by collecting, interpreting, preserving and presenting the information and objects concerning the history of Arlington Heights.
The society is based at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, with a campus containing five buildings. To fulfill this mission, volunteers are needed.
Whether you are a history buff or novice, your help is greatly appreciated. There are many areas in which volunteers can get involved:
• Farmers market: This is where help is needed right now. Vendors are local farmers, chefs, gardeners and producers. During this event, three of the historical buildings are open to the public.
Market volunteers have the option of greeting shoppers as they enter, monitoring the picnic table area or helping with set up and take down of the market each Saturday through Oct. 16.
• Tours of museum buildings: Tours are given each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. After training, docents share the story of the German-American Muller Family. Tour walks through two homes, a soda pop factory and carriage house owned by this family. Also on the tour is a replica log cabin.
• Historical artifacts and documents: The collection is the cornerstone of the Arlington Heights Historical Society. In addition to the artifacts on display, there are thousands more housed and preserved along with a vast collection of newspaper clippings, photos and historical documents. Volunteers involved with the collection help to organize and record information on these objects.
• Special events: The museum hosts several events throughout the year. Volunteers are needed the day of the event to help with community engagement. Coming up, the museum will host All Hollows Eve Oct. 23 and a Holiday Open House Dec. 11.
• Committees: This is for the volunteer who wants to help run the historical society. Committee members provide input and implement direction determined by the group. The society board leads several committees: Buildings and Collections, Programs and Fundraising, Membership, Communications and Farmers Market.
